Sri Lanka - On the trail of the ancient Buddhist Shrines (World Heritage Sites)

Sri Lanka's history dates back well before 5th century BC. It was known for trade during the Roman-Hellenistic period. Buddhism was introduced in Sri Lanka in 247 BC. Ancient cities like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa have historical importance.

The sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

The Sri Maha Bodhi tree seen here, supported with golden struts, is the first among the Eight Holy Sites (Atmasthana) in Sri Lanka. The Buddhists look upon it as a living being, the Buddha himself in living form. Thus they call it with veneration 'Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi'. The tree belongs to the ficus family. The botanists have named it Ficus religiosa.
