Uzbekistan - The heartland of the ancient Silk Route - Nodir - Devon Begi Madrassa, Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Silk from China and spices and precious stones from India were traded through Central Asia, on a regular basis, from about 200 B.C. Names such as Samarkand, Bukhara conjure up images of fairy tales that start with 'Once upon a time...'

Nodir - Devon Begi Madrassa, Bukhara, Uzbekistan

In 1620, Nodir Devon Begi, the Prime Ministare of Bukhara ordered the construction two madrassas in his name, the Nodir Devon Begi Khanaka on the west side of the Hauz and the Nodir Devon Begi madrassa on the east side of the Hauz. The latter is adorned with 'Semurg' the fantasy birds of many legends. This is unusual as animal or human icons are not a part of Muslim architecture.
