Uzbekistan - The heartland of the ancient Silk Route - Two shopkeepers engrossed in a marketside chess game in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Silk from China and spices and precious stones from India were traded through Central Asia, on a regular basis, from about 200 B.C. Names such as Samarkand, Bukhara conjure up images of fairy tales that start with 'Once upon a time...'

Two shopkeepers engrossed in a marketside chess game in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Thanks to the Russian and Persian influence, chess is played with passion in Uzbekistan. Often, shopkeepers, while waiting for customers, play quick chess games in front of their shops. I played two games with them, won one and quickly lost the next. I had an audience of nearby shopkeepers. They applauded when I won and wished me luck for the next game when I lost !!
