Uzbekistan - The heartland of the ancient Silk Route - Statue of Khodja Nasiruddin at Lyabi Hauz Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Silk from China and spices and precious stones from India were traded through Central Asia, on a regular basis, from about 200 B.C. Names such as Samarkand, Bukhara conjure up images of fairy tales that start with 'Once upon a time...'

Statue of Khodja Nasiruddin at Lyabi Hauz Bukhara, Uzbekistan

The affable mullah Nasirudin, who figures prominently in Sufi tales as a wise fool, is given a pride of place in Bukhara. One of the stories about him goes like this: One day Nasiruddin was enjoying the aroma of kebabs being made. The kebab maker demanded money saying that Nasiruddin was enjoying the smell. Nasiruddin took a coin from his pocket and tossed it up with a ringing sound and said now that the shopkeeper has heard the sound of his money, that should be payment enough !
