Special purpose access -of interest to only a few
I'm trying out using a restricted access for a bit , for example, for the 300 photos of a group where most of you would want a max. of 50 thankyouverymuch. [wink] ...Or with special purpose for just one person, etc. I'm not in to restricting access in general, as those who know me know! But, you know, stuff like family photos, or 300 photos one morning from the N. C. Botanical Gardens, etc. is quite different from most of the photos I post here.

Jennifer Curtis -violinist, Joanna Sisk-Purvis -flautist, & 2012 Music for Children Chamber Music Festival
Jun 4, 2012

Violinist Jennifer Curtis is touring this week, playing every night and sometimes twice a day locally in her hometown, Chapel Hill, NC. She has engagements in as diverse a range of settings as one could imagine, playing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, playing concerts in churches, sharing her music in intimate front-porch settings for restaurants, and in small social-gathering spots around. (Okay, that last listing = bars.)

For this night, at United Church of Chapel Hill, the Chamber Music Festival evening opened with Music for Children, featuring flautist Joanna Sisk-Purvis, who teaches at Carolina Friends School in Chapel Hill. Festival Director Matthew Chicurel conducted a piece as well. The evening ended with Jennifer Curtis, and lastly, with Curtis and Skye Mcleod on cajon.

The Wiley Fosters, at Local 506
Jul 25, 2011

This was a work in progress, in editing, pruning, & paring that I have not finished. The work I do for my primary hobby was finished a day or so after the show. I had a blast!, and loved many of the photos!

But to give photos to a group is a completely additional project for me, and takes far longer than I normally can take. [My asking a band to just run a digital or even tape recorder during a session and then present it as a finished cd is the parallel. You KNOW how long the process is for just getting a master for a cd. Same here.] And as much as I'd love to spend another many hours to edit further and post a finished product for others who have asked for a few photos, I don't have that time. I spend every spare minute I have IN shows themselves! Here in Chapel Hill, EVERY night of the week as a rule has multiple options; it isn’t just a “one show a week, or MONTH” here.

So, again, this is a work in progress that I may or may not pare down or edit. I hope you enjoy it!

IMPORTANT: all photos are copyrighted, of course. You can repost to facebook or to reverbnation only, and only if the copyright is included before the photo is republished "live". Let me know if you'd like to request any other use of them. Again, I hope you enjoy them. And go see The Wiley Fosters!

The Humboldt Current, 6/5/11 at Chapel Hill's NIGHTLIGHT
Jun 5, 2011

Sara Morris is, well, The Humboldt Current. Her shows are rare, about like cicadas and beautiful blooms on a century plant. On Sunday, June 5, 2011, she played her first show in over 3 years. (Last one was 2/9/08.) It was worth the wait, and had me wanting to beg for more shows this year. Accompanying her were Laurie Desch on guitar and mandolin, Katie Spencer on accordion and glockenspiel, and Perry Wright on keys and maybe a synthesizer. Venue was Nightlight on W. Rosemary St, Chapel Hill NC (http://www.nightlightclub.com/)

FYI, Laurie plays under her own name; Katie is from the former Chapel Hill group, "Sweater Weather"; and Perry Wright is the heart and soul of "The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellars". For fans of Perry's gorgeous, provocative music, he will be playing again, resurrecting his "Prayers and Tears..." group this September 2011 for Raleigh's Hopscotch Music Festival, along with the likes of The Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices, Drive-by Truckers, more national grabbers, and many local groups. -Not bad company.

Sara keeps a low profile, but there is music she has kept at http://www.myspace.com/thehumboldtcurrent , though until I left her a note, the last date she had visited her page had been 2008.

IMPT: please see other album description paragraphs about copyrights, use of photos, etc. Email me at betsyharris@hotmail.com with inquiries. Thanks, and enjoy!

Skylar Gudasz's recording party
Jan 30, 2011

Skylar Gudusz and The Ugly Girls is laying down a cd, and thrilled many of her friends by inviting us all to help record one of the beautiful songs last January. We crowded one of the rooms at Arbor Ridge Studios (http://www.arborridgestudios.com/) learned our parts, rehearsed, recorded, and had a great time being part of Skylar's timeless pieces. Visit her page at http://skylargudaszandtheuglygirls.com/ , and pick up one of her cd's. She's "good people", and a talented musician, songwriter, and composer.

As with all photos here, explicitly stated or not, the same boilerplate:
1. I recommend slideshow view (choose "view album" and then select slideshow. Can set time interval on right).
2. All images are copyrighted and all rights reserved. Mount Moriah, 12/08/10
Dec 8, 2010

Mount Moriah in it's core form is Heather McEntire and Jenks Miller. This show at Chapel Hill's Local 506 music club included a few musician friends who sometimes (or often) accompany her. Check http://www.mountmoriahband.com/ and take a look at some of their excellent videos. ("Old Gowns" is my favorite, both musically and visually.) Better still, cue up that video, http://vimeo.com/15035076 , and play the audio in the background as you view the photos in slideshow mode. For this, the standard interval is the fastest you will want to view, and you may even want to slow it down a bit. It's gorgeous, I promise.

[Please see other albums for boilerplate information about copyrights and other rights.]

BIG NOTE about all my photos: I'm always having to transfer files for maxed-out computer space. It's usually difficult because I have a couple of hundred of folders -among thousands- that have partially-edited shows. This was one that, like many, had hours logged and only a few hours to go. I've been so moved by Mount Moriah's music lately that I wanted to spend another few hours today to post at least Heather's part of this December 2010 show. Like much of the work I post (sometimes on facebook, but normally just on Fotki), it is redundant in several places. Most of these photos are straight out of the camera, and I'd have liked to clean them up a bit. But rather than lose the public view of this altogether, I'm posting as is.

I hope you enjoy these and all photographers' photos. It, for me, is truly a privilege to witness our performing arts firsthand, and a joy and honor to celebrate our artists in this way.

GOODBYE, TITAN in a rare Durham show, 9/3/10
Sep 3, 2010

GOODBYE, TITAN (Raleigh NC) headlined a Labor Day weekend show, 2010, at Broad Street Cafe in nearby Durham. This is an extraordinary group, performing gorgeous instrumental pieces punctuated by majestic, sweeping, soaring passages. They are often compared to Explosions in the Sky, and Mogwai. Make every effort if you have an opportunity to see a live performance; they are best experienced in person. Check http://www.reverbnation.com/goodbyetitan , and also http://music.mync.com/2010/09/sessions-at-studio-b-with-goodbye-titan/ .

Lizzy Ross Band, at Big Fat Gap's Christmas Party, 12/19/10
Dec 19, 2010

Lizzy Ross Band, at Big Fat Gap's Christmas Party, 12/19/10. Okay: this is primarily for Liz right now because I have not pared out but a few obvious duplicates. (-Holidays, and I'm going to be doing other things for a bit.) And at this point, most of the photographs are straight out of the camera. But me, I'm wide awake on these and will have a hard time paring down to my favorites. I will touch up many, especially those of Dylan who was heavily shadowed.

Grab some hot choc., click http://lizzy.net to pull up some of her songs, and enjoy looking over and over! Use slideshow mode.

Remember, all photos are copyrighted with all rights reserved. And, of course, you may not capture in any way and alter, edit, etc. (You ARE welcome to post on facebook, reverbnation, and myspace with the copyright noted with EACH photo and BEFORE posting, thankyouverymuch. Again, no alterations. If there are any other uses you would like to request, whether using on blogs, other websites, prints, other media, etc., please contact me at betsyharris@hotmail.com , with the subject line, "fotki -Lizzy Ross Band". Thanks!)

Lizzy Ross - vocals, guitar;
Drew Smith – drums;
Casey Toll – bass;
Dylan Shrader - lead guitar.

Nightsound Studios' Compilation Project - Local bands covering local bands, Red Carpet event
Jun 24, 2010

This was the red-carpet event for the drawing to see which 15 bands would be covering their colleagues in the local music scene on a special compilation cd to be released. Great fun!!! And an exciting project!

More detail later. Just getting postings up for now. For this event, I took a snapshot vs "photography" approach since there were so many people I wanted to include in documentation and events would unfold quickly. So, again, despite my personal preferences, I am posting fun snapshots to give a full picture of this unusual event! I'll post the link soon where you can buy the cd and get info. (It will be a Nightsound Studios site, Carrboro NC).

miscellaneous - may move these around later

As of ~2010, the NEWest PHOTOS now are posted at the beginning, changing how I first had posted these. Hale Dixon (photos 1-9) opened a show at The Cave in Chapel Hill, 2/28/07, and stood ground without blinking, as best I could tell. (I arrived from an earlier show elsewhere, and had just begun snapping a few shots as they were finishing the last song of their part of the show.) These are not quality shots at all. But if you, like me, wanted to see what the group looks like, this will help. UPDATE: John Dixon expanded his group and changed his Hale Dixon group's name in Spring 2007 to TEN PENNY. Old Bricks
Jan 8, 2010

Old Bricks (Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Raleigh; http://www.myspace.com/oldbricks) playing at The Cave (http://caverntavern.com) 1/8/10. Had major shooting challenges this night (and lost my shooting position), but decided to post anyway. This is a group to keep a keen eye on; don't pass up the opportunity to see them play. (As of this posting, they have another local show scheduled 5/15/10 at Cat's Cradle as well as other shows in other towns.)

As always, when you click "view photos", I recommend selecting the SLIDESHOW viewing option. Can set time interval as well.
And if you'd like to post any on band or personal myspace, facebook, or reverbnation pages (non-commercial sites), please include the copyright credit with each photo immediately upon posting, thanks!withasmile. -Hope you enjoy these!

SWASO at The Cradle
Dec 13, 2009

SWASO played a killer show at Carrboro's famed Cat's Cradle, 12/13/09. Thought I'd get some posted from this outstanding show before I took the last of 2009 shows off my hard drive. Opening for SWASO were Robert Sledge and The Flashlight Assembly, and Stranger Spirits; I'll try to post some from their sets as well in the upcoming days. In the meantime, check http://www.myspace.com/swasomusic .

The Tender Fruit, ...Midtown Dickens, & ...Spider Bags
Feb 6, 2010

(Photos from the headliner group, Roman Candle, are in a separate album, above.)

The Tender Fruit (with special guest Phil Cook of Megafaun), Midtown Dickens, & Spider Bags at The Pour House in Raleigh NC, 2/6/10. The venue was packed, and the crowds were clearly fans of all the groups. The energy, anticipation, and enthusiasm made for one of the most enjoyable shows in a long while! WKNC, NC State's student radio station was the benefactor of the proceeds.

Jill Andrews, ...BJ Barham, & ...Jason Kutchma
Jan 13, 2010

Jill Andrews, formerly of The Everybodyfields, with her new group (http://www.myspace.com/jillandrewsmusic) headlined a show opened by Amelia's Mechanics at The Pour House, Raleigh NC, 01/13/10. To my great dismay, Amelia's Mechanics had begun earlier than initially listed, and had just finished by the time I got inside just past 10pm. Jill Andrews did not disappoint however, and I was quickly smitten with this new project of hers. NOTE: I shot this show with two different cameras, so there are two distinct sets of Jill Andrews: photos 1-87, and again 125-196, so be sure to look at both sets! (159 of her group.)

After The Pour House I walked 2 doors up to Tir Na Nog Irish Pub to see two bands' frontmen who are their groups' singer/songwriter, playing a solo acoustic set. Featured were (generally seated on the left) Jason Kutchma of Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic) and (generally seated on the right) BJ Barham of American Aquarium (http://www.myspace.com/americanaquarium) As with Jill Andrews' photos in two parts, I shot this show with two different cameras, so there are two distinct sets of Jason and BJ: photos 88-124, and again 197- 245. So be sure to look at both sets! (78 of BJ & Jason.)
Photos 246-253 are shots of Tir Na Nog's interior.

Lud, at The Cave, Chapel Hill
Jan 2, 2010

Lud played one of their far too rare shows at The Cave on Chapel Hill's W. Franklin Street to launch the first Saturday night of a new decade. Superior show! Lud is Kirk Ross on vocals and guitar, Sara Bell* on bass, Lee Waters on drums, and Bryon Settle on guitar. (*...except when Sara had to zip out to move her truck that was blocking someone, and former Lud bassist Paul Price, visiting from New York, filled in on 3 or so songs like a pro.) Check http://www.ludland.com/ilud/ (or http://www.myspace.com/ludland) I'll post some videos at http://www.youtube.com/betsybetsybetsy .

THE TODDLERS, 7/18/09, at Local 506
Jul 18, 2009

THE TODDLERS opened a mid-summer show at Chapel Hill's Local 506 for another Chapel Hill group offering classic rock, Transportation. The Toddlers are still quite new, but are lighting fires with each performance. Highly recommend. Check http://www.myspace.com/thetoddlersmusic . They maintain a low-key profile, so keep an ear close to the ground to catch their shows. On drums -Morgan Friedman; guitar and vocals -Nathan Toben. Joining them this night was guest bassist and former bandmate of a former band, Ellis Anderson.
Bonus: there are videos posted --very amateur (shot with video camera in left hand while shooting manual mode stills in right) at http://www.youtube.com/betsybetsybetsy .

TRANSPORTATION, July 2009
Jul 18, 2009

Transportation is a 3-piece classic rock band who has been making exemplary retro rock for years now, long before I began following local indie music. If you haven't caught a show recently, check their schedule at http://www.myspace.com/transportation for one in the Chapel Hill area. If you've never seen them, LOOK FOR ONE IN EARNEST. They often play Reservoir, and less frequently at other venues including Local 506 and The Cave. As of this posting, their next show is tentatively 1/9/10 at Local 506. Transportation is Ben Dunlap on drums, Stephen Murtaugh on guitar, and frontman Robert Scruggs on bass.
Bonus: there are videos posted --very amateur (shot with video camera in left hand while shooting manual mode stills in right) at http://www.youtube.com/betsybetsybetsy .

I Was Totally Destroying It, and ...The Small Ponds
Nov 20, 2009

I Was Totally Destroying It opened a gem of a night at Raleigh's The Pour House, 11/20/09. Next up was a still-new group, The Small Ponds - 5-piece group headed by Caitlin Cary and Matt Douglas. Rounding out the night was The Monologue Bombs. [may upload their set in a day or so] This was a dream show: perfect, start to finish! More details will follow.
(some boilerplate info)

Old 86, at The Cave, Chapel Hill,
Apr 26, 2009

Old 86 played an early show at famed venue, The Cave, in Chapel Hill, 4/26/09. Members are all in high school, but make no pejorative assumption about their youth; they have mad skillz. They could intimidate even seasoned performers ...but they'd never be so inclined. Old 86 played two sets with an intermission, opening the night at The Cave for Pinche Gringo, The Siberians (NY), The Dirty Little Heaters, & THE SPINNS.

Check http://www.myspace.com/86music and http://web.mac.com/ewhittier4/site/Home.html . Also http://caverntavern.com/schedule.shtml for an outstanding schedule of upcoming shows at The Cave, a historic tavern, and Chapel Hill's oldest. -And http://www.myspace.com/templesofgrey for links to some of the best local indie music anywhere in the country.

The photos I post are primarily for the enjoyment of the public, groups' fans, people interested in seeing how a group looks as they perform, venues considering a group for booking, most certainly for the groups themselves, and for myself. More often than not, this means I post LOTS of images of varying quality, shooting under dire conditions. ...Just so you know [grin].

Mingus Young, ...Death of the Sun, ...and SeepeopleS
Dec 7, 2006

(Chapel Hill's Wetlands Dance Hall, now known as Blend.) After a while, I stop getting so uppity about posting only what I think is my BEST work, since that often means never getting around to posting at all. So here's some good, but also some blurries, some funs, and some that I've posted for reasons not worth explaining. -Hope you enjoy them all. They represent an evening of good and great music by really nice people! [Later revision, after looking at a couple of videos from that show: FANTASTIC music, FANTASTIC show!!! For videos, check the blog at http://www.myspace.com/templesofgrey .

TROIKA: ...Dynamite Brothers, ...Rat Jackson, ...The Loners, & ...The Love Language
Nov 8, 2009

Saturday night, Troika Festival, at Broad Street Cafe, Durham NC. Great music! The play order was Dynamite Brothers (http://www.myspace.com/dynamitebrothers) Rat Jackson (http://www.myspace.com/ratjacksonmusic) The Loners (http://www.churchkeyrecords.com/artists/loners) and The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage) Three bands are from Chapel Hill, and The Loners are from Raleigh. Durham was the host city for this event, and several outstanding Durham groups played, proudly representing their city.

I recommend viewing in SLIDESHOW MODE; you can set the time interval as you like. Also, there are some I shot with another camera at the end. So those few begin the sequence of bands again.

As always, if you'd like to post any photos on your myspace, facebook, or reverbnation pages, please include a photo credit &/or copyright WITH EACH PHOTO, immediately upon posting. That way, if anyone else wants to snag or use, both you and they will know who owns the photo and whom to contact to request use. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy these!

Lost in the Trees, in Gerrard Hall, UNC-CH campus
Oct 28, 2009

Lost in the Trees, in Gerrard Hall, UNC-CH campus, 10/28/09. -Stellar evening of music, in one of the most beautiful, historic, campus buildings.
NOTE: There are TWO SETS of photos, shot with different cameras. So somewhere in the midst of the total group, photos from a 2nd camera will start the evening again. It's deja vu but with new photos!

As always, if you'd like to post any photos on your myspace, facebook, or reverbnation pages, please include a photo credit &/or copyright WITH EACH PHOTO, immediately upon posting. Open Mic at Jack Sprat Café
Oct 5, 2009

Open Mic at Jack Sprat Café, Monday nights now. This was from October 5, 2009.
I shot with 2 different cameras, and the photos are uploading in 2 different groups. In other words, if you're looking for someone in a particular play order, they're likely to come up twice. ...Or three times, because some of the earlier performers stuck around to play again at the end of the evening.

I missed the first two performers, but the rest were: Johnny D., Tad Dreis, Chris Hendricks, featured performer Patrick Phelan with Rob DiMauro (percussion), Daniel Roubey, John Laible, Paul House, Jordan Seal & Ryan Splain, Spencer Brisson, Rafael Green, Chris B...x (couldn't read surname), and Bobby & Tristan.

As always, if you'd like to post any photos on your pages (myspace, facebook, reverbnation), please include a photo credit &/or copyright WITH EACH PHOTO, immediately upon posting. That way, if anyone else wants to snag or use, both you and they will know who owns the photo and whom to contact to request use.

Check out open mic most Mondays! Come play, read poetry, dance, paint -what ever talents you want to present (95% is music). Clink http://www.myspace.com/jackspratcafeandbar for a schedule of really good upcoming shows .

Josh Drye Band, at Chapel Hill's NIGHTLIGHT
Oct 2, 2009

Josh Drye Band is a new group in Chapel Hill, and began playing shows in August 2009. Previously I'd seen Josh Drye at Jack Sprat Cafe's open mic night, along with friend Wylie Hunter, where they each began honing their art publicly. Josh's band stretches into previously unexplored areas from mainstream rock. When they were once billed as "Vaudeville rock", I had to nod at the apt categorization; they fit that description as well as any other. As far as the band's name, I'm not sure which if any of the current names will stick. This show was billed as "Josh Drye and The Slightly Moist" (drye, moist). Usually I've seen "Josh Drye and The Revolution", though I think I've come across a 3rd name as well. Currently he has no website I can publicly pin down. If you were desperate to contact him, maybe try his friend's page at http://www.myspace.com/wyliehunter . They share some of the same band members.
Also playing this show were The Toddlers, and SNMNMNM in a reunion show of sorts, with several invited friends joining them.

Definitely check http://www.nightlightclub.com for the schedule of outstanding music many nights of the week.

For URL's to lots of low-qual videos on Myspace and YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/betsybetsybetsy) that I've shot from groups who've played around Chapel Hill, visit the BLOG at http://www.myspace.com/betsyssmile .
Also, as usual, you're welcome to post at no charge in photo albums on facebook, myspace, or reverbnation if no photo is altered and, of course, each photo carries a copyright credit. [Please let me know if you'd like to use any photo in any other way.] Hope you enjoy them!

Luego, at Cat's Cradle
Aug 21, 2009

Luego played a benefit show at Cat's Cradle, August 21, 2009. -Posting a ton of photos, though I may come back and pare it down to 20-30. In the meantime, go to http://www.myspace.com/luego , and start the player, set the photo viewing to slideshow, and enjoy their music.

Also, as usual, if you (friends, bands, individuals from bands, etc), would like to use photos on facebook, reverbnation, or myspace, you're welcome to as long as no photo is altered and, of course, each photo carries a copyright credit. Maserati, at Local 506, Chapel Hill
Sep 25, 2009

Tragic update, 11/08/09: http://bit.ly/1hWuS6 . (I'll post videos in a day or so from their show 6 weeks ago.)

Maserati (Athens GA; http://www.myspace.com/maseratirocks ) opened for MONO, from Japan. Incredible show! Here are photos from Maserati's set. They sorta' have a break in the sequencing toward the end, as we're picking up with an alternative camera I used.

Minor Stars - debut at The Reservoir (ALBUM 1 of 2)
Aug 12, 2009

Minor Stars is the newest project of Chapel Hill's Eric Wallen. Their debut was an impressive show in the music-historic building housing The Reservoir, at the end of Chapel Hill's W. Franklin Street as it enters Carrboro. Minor Stars (http://www.myspace.com/minorstars) is Eric Wallen -guitar & vox, Matt McCallus -drums, and Bob Dearborn - bass.

This album has pretty much straight-forward images. But DO ALSO look at the album above this one if you like visuals!

If you would like to copy images to public social networking sites (facebook, reverbnation, or myspace), please include the copyright credit with each photo. Please contact me for other requested uses.
As always, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND VIEWING IN SLIDESHOW MODE. Pull up their music at http://www.myspace.com/minorstars , click "view photos", look to the right for slideshow mode, turn the volume up, and enjoy!

SnuzzFest - with LOTS of musicians!
Sep 7, 2009

BIG NOTE: There are TWO different sets of photos, one following the other, which will be separate at least for now. So if you're looking for someone in a particular show order, you'll want to know that another smaller set of photos begins again about 70-75% of the way through.

SnuzzFest, honoring Britt Harper Uzzell (Snuzz, pronounced like "snooze"), and raising funds to assist in his medical treatments. Details will follow, but just getting these posted for now. Venue: Local 506, Chapel Hill NC.

Also, as usual, you're welcome to post at no charge in photo albums on facebook, myspace, or reverbnation if no photo is altered and, of course, each photo carries a copyright credit. [Please let me know if you'd like to use any photo in any other way.] Hope you enjoy them!

Track & Field Recording ...Bringerer, ...Blag’ard, ...Hazerai, & ...Caltrop
Feb 29, 2008

Track & Field Recording Studios’ last hurrah, 2/29/08 weekend, as they were vacating their location at 100-B Brewer Lane in Carrboro NC at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro line. Photos (mostly unprepped) include groups Bringerer, Blag’ard, Hazerai, and Caltrop, and a few of the interior spaces of the building. Currently, Nick Peterson is still recording; check info for Track and Field, especially the blog, at http://profile.myspace.com/trackandfieldrecording .

These pics were posted on a secured setting until 8/09 when I moved them to the public folders. I added snapshots #150 & beyond in 8/09. They are from a different camera set to <~99KB each, so they’re tee-niny & unedited. They’re from Caltrop’s set.
[And somehow, a year or so later, the ones needing rotation have reverted. Sorry, and grrrrrrr.... If I come across originals again and think of it, I may reload them.]

If you’d like to post on facebook, reverbnation, or myspace, please include the copyright with each photo. As always, I hope you enjoy these!

Contradiction ...and Glorydive at Cat's Cradle
Mar 7, 2007

CONTRADICTION: This group plays smooth, sophisticated, jazzy hiphop on a level that can stand ground with the best. I am constantly surprised to recall how young this group is. Date/show comment: I added 4 or so at the end from their December 20, 2006 show, which was at Cat's Cradle. Visit www.myspace.com/contradictionhiphop .

8/09 additions:
GLORYDIVE also played, and a stellar show it was!, as I recall. I'm posting these now because a blog from this week indicates they're NOT dead, and they've got shows booked for November 2009. Yes! Check http://www.myspace.com/glorydive for any updates and new shows being added. [BTW in addition to other projects members may have been involved in, yes, that is Brian Tavener on beats who left in mid 2007 to join Blue Man Group. chi-chinnnng.]
Also, see the first album, currently at the bottom of the my Fotki page of albums, for photos from Glorydive's 1/26/07 show in Raleigh's The Pour House.

As always, same boilerplate info:
-- I recommend SLIDESHOW mode;
-- please don't use photos without posting credits/copyright for each one at the time you post (thanks!) ;
-- please use with credit posted only on facebook, myspace, or reverbnation photo albums, thankyouohsomuch;
-- contact me pretty please if you would like to request any other use, and I'll see if I can pay an enormous camera replacement bill I have. [wink]
Welcome back, Glorydive!

TIN STAR ... cd release show at The Cave, Chapel Hill
Jul 17, 2009

TIN STAR's cd release show at The Cave, Chapel Hill. Such a good show!!! Visit their site at http://www.myspace.com/tinstarnc . Also on the playbill was Pipe, the highly-acclaimed group under Merge Records (http://www.mergerecords.com/artists/pipe) scheduled for their first show in over a decade. Due to a member recovering from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, they had to withdraw from the lineup. Also playing were Joe Romeo, and Shit Horses.
I recommend viewing in SLIDESHOW mode; look for that option at the right when you first click open the page to view. Set the interval as you'd like.

[Please let me know if you'd like to use any photo in any other way.] -Hope you enjoy them!

Alex Wilkins ...at Town Hall Grill, Chapel Hill

Alex Wilkins, frontman and singer/songwriter for Tripp (http://www.myspace.com/trippband) played a solo covers at Chapel Hill's Town Hall Grill, located in Southern Village. Although it was a sultry, humid night, their highly-effective central fan kept everything unquestionably comfortable, much to our surprise!

Reed Benjamin ...at Local 506, Chapel Hill NC
Jul 8, 2009

Reed has just recently returned to the music performance side of life (at least from what I've seen in Chapel Hill), and I, for one, am glad to know he's still cultivating this facet of his interests. He opened a show with a short set in July 2008, playing to the early crowds within the viewing/standing area rather than from the stage. From the camera's perspective, it was pitch black. From the human eye's view, it was ALMOST pitch black, being backlit at best. And I didn't want to use a flash during his show. So these are under the category "fun"! I finally gave in for a few lightning bolts near the end of his set. Check his page at http://www.myspace.com/reedbenjamin .

As usual, you're welcome to post in albums on myspace, facebook, and reverbnation with a copyright credit with each photo. Other uses?: get in touch, prettyplease. Thanks!

Weatherkings ...at Local 506, Chapel Hill
Aug 8, 2008

Weatherkings, (labeled as " * Weatherkings * " at http://www.myspace.com/weatherkingsband ) played a RARE show last August. There's another show scheduled for July 31, 2009 at Nightlight. Don't miss it. Here are a few fast photos I pulled from an old external hard drive. Brings a happy tear to the eye.

As with all, if you'd like to post any on facebook, myspace, reverbnation, etc. please include the copyright credit with each photo, just like you'd want if someone recorded your song on their cd. Thanks [wink].

NATHAN OLIVER’s cd show for Cloud Animals at Local 506 Live Music Club, Chapel Hill. The Proclivities and Schooner opened; their photos are in the album below. (-would have been far too many to post with The Proclivities’ and Schooner’s.) Yes, yes, dear, I KNOW there are a lot of them. Mandolin Orange ...at The Station, Carrboro NC
Apr 5, 2009

Mandolin Orange, ohhh, you're so sweet and tangy. Late night, outside at The Station, Carrboro NC., 4/5/09. Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz; cool names too, eah? The album starts off with local musician of several groups, Joe Troop; his primary venture now is Firehouse Rhythm Kings.

These are raw, unwashed, unedited, picked straight from the camera. I've been trying to get to them to color correct, edit, etc, but no time. Here they are, ripe and juicy, so grab a napkin.

All rights reserved. Please check boilerplate details on other albums about using/posting, videos of groups, optimal viewing (slideshow mode), etc. Hope you enjoy them and find them at a local show soon!

Birds & Arrows, and ... MYSTERY ROAD, at Mansion 462
Mar 5, 2009

My, MY, I can't come close to getting everything posted for groups that I'd like to! Mystery Road certainly has had my heart, though I'm just now getting photos up from a recent show in their 13-month or so existence. Sadly, lead singer/songwriter Don de Leaumont is moving, and Mystery Road played their last show in June 2009. These are for you, friends of Mystery Road. I hope you enjoy them! (http://www.myspace.com/mysteryroadband)

Opening for Mystery Road, and beginning the photo set, is Birds & Arrows, with Andrea and Pete Connolly. A must-see group! (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)

Ben Flanagan (San Francisco CA), & ... I Was Totally Destroying It (Chapel Hill)
Apr 22, 2009

Ben Flanagan (of The Trophy Fire, San Francisco CA; http://www.myspace.com/thetrophyfire ), & ... I Was Totally Destroying It (Chapel Hill NC; http://www.myspace.com/iwtdi ) playing at The Reservoir on the Carrboro/ Chapel Hill line. This venue, like The Cave, Nightlight, etc., is difficult to shoot, here primarily for the backlight. [Many photographers won't shoot or post much from here for that reason. It takes a punch to your pride. Nonetheless, I remain shameless (wink, grin).] Venues like Cat's Cradle, on the other hand, often seem easy by comparison. So... many of these photos carry more blur than I'd like. The music though is fine, and these are some of my souvenirs from another fine show.

Check Reservoir's site at http://reservoirbar.net/calendar.html for upcoming shows, with convenient links to bands' pages.

As with all, if you'd like to post any on facebook, myspace, reverbnation, etc. please include the copyright credit with each photo, just like your grammie taught you. Thanks [wink].

2/3/09 UPDATE: Wendy Spitzer's FELIX OBELIX (Bynum NC; http://www.myspace.com/felixobelix) photos are up! Photos 110-247. -Reminders of one of the best new sounds we've heard since... Lemming Malloy. Innovators. Congratulations, Wendy!

BTW, as always, if anyone would like to post photos on MySpace, Facebook, or ReverbNation, please include the copyright credit with each photo, thankyouverymuch!
Also, VIEWING REC.: when you click "view album" and the photo(s) first come up, look to the right for the SLIDESHOW option. That's my favorite. Look for the tiny carets (^) to toggle options off & on or make changes, like setting the change-view interval.

There are lots of low-qual videos (1700) I've shot from Chapel Hill-area shows at http://www.youtube.com/betsybetsybetsy and the blogs at http://www.myspace.com/betsyssmile . More and more are posted weekly, or even daily. Please enjoy them as well.

Minus Sound Research: local musicians’ art exhibition, at Wootini Gallery, Carrboro NC
Oct 10, 2008

Minus Sound Research (MSR) explores other artistic outlets of musicians in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. These are photos from the 3rd exhibition at Wootini Gallery in Carr Mill Mall, Carrboro NC. Opening night was October 10, 2008.
I arrived almost an hour into the event, and the gallery was PACKED. After a half hour or so, the crowd thinned out enough to shoot some non-flash photos. This year's artists, best known as musicians to most of us, are: Maria Albani (Schooner, Organos), Laura Ballance (Superchunk), Anna Bullard (Pox World Empire), Catherine Edgerton (Midtown Dickens), John Harrison (North Elementary, Hundred Air), Reid Johnson (Schooner) and Nathan Oliver White (Nathan Oliver). Visit http://www.myspace.com/minussoundresearch for links to their music sites, and for additional information links in the blog. Also visit www.myspace.com/wootini .

As a reminder, while the photographs from this exhibition are copyrighted by me, the art and images I've photographed are, of course, copyrighted by the artists themselves. You may contact them through the MSR website at http://www.myspace.com/minussoundresearch .

Trekky presents Christmas at the Cradle, 2008
Dec 15, 2008

Christmas at The Cradle, now in its 3rd year and organized by Trekky Records, began on an incredibly high note in it's first year. It has only gotten better each subsequent year. -Sorta' like Michael Phelps setting personal and world records, and then busting the roof off of them each subsequent time out.

I think what I love the most about this event, aside from being a Christmas show , is seeing the local favorite groups you know and love playing music -some remixed Christmas standards and new original Christmas music- quite different from their standard songs. I guess that means I've got a ton of video to post as well. ...Because I'm hoping you'll click through their entire show and see for yourself. I don't recall if I ever got last year's videos posted or not; -don't think I did, but no one asked me for them either, so... Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy these!

Proceeds from this show benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3 years now. –Just makes my Christmas even more joyous. Thanks, Trekky! In fact, an additional donation to MS (http://www.nationalmssociety.org) in honor of Trekky Records would be a wonderful way to say thanks to Trekky.

Here’s a breakdown so you can quickly jump to favorite sections:
~ before show (photos 1-8), http://www.catscradle.com ;
~ Trekky Yuletide Orchestra (photos 9-43), http://www.myspace.com/trekkyrecordschristmas ;
~ Rock n Roll Elf (Clarque Blomquist), (photos 44-56), http://www.myspace.com/thekingsburymanx ;
~ North Elementary (photos 57-74), http://www.myspace.com/northelementary ;
~ International Grapevine (photos 75-124), http://www.myspace.com/theinternationalgrapevine ;
~ The Scene of the Crime Rovers (photos 125-134), http://www.myspace.com/sceneofthecrimerovers ;
~ The Future Kings of Nowhere (photos 135-162), http://www.myspace.com/thefuturekings ;
~ Sorry About Dresden (photos 163-226), http://www.myspace.com/sorryaboutdresden ;
~ Billy Sugerfix, master of ceremonies (some between sets, & musician photos 227-229), http://www.myspace.com/billysugarfix ;
~ Megafaun (photos 230-307), http://www.myspace.com/megafaun ;
~ Trekky Yuletide Orchestra (photos 308-491), http://www.myspace.com/trekkyrecordschristmas ;
~ après show (photos 492-503), http://www.catscradle.com .

Check the text section of some of my other photo albums for standard boilerplate stuff, like
~~posting, gratis, with copyright credit (& website ideally) in photo sections of myspace, facebook, or reverbnation,
~~contacting me if you'd like to use for other purposes,
~~ideal ways to view (use slideshow), and how to more easily jump around in slideshow mode or to start mid-way,
~~ looking for the little toggle carets to click this text & other things out of the way,
~~ways to make me financially comfortable so I can get wild with a Diet Coke EVERY night I go out, or to buy a lens for shooting shows, etc.

Oct 1, 2008

Secondhand Freespace's 2nd forum, at Local 506 Live Music Club, Chapel Hill. Read what this is all about at http://www.myspace.com/2ndhandfreespace .

After the forum as I walked to my car on W. Franklin St, three guys walking in the other direction said, "You HAVE to check the music at The Cave!". So I did. Nice tip, fellas! At The Cave (http://caverntavern.com) I found Blaine Ziglar and The Phantom Vibrations ( http://www.myspace.com/blaineziglar ); -good group from Eden NC.

American Aquarium opened the show for Saturday night's THE CLUB IS OPEN FESTIVAL, a special Club event held in July 2008. It was a week-long event of great music at different venues in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, with proceeds going to Carolina for Kibera.
I'll get photos from the other groups posted when I can, bit by bit! After this night, there's just one more night of this special fundraiser, which closes out the festival.

Beloved Binge, ...Maple Stave, ...Rat Jackson at THE CLUB IS OPEN FESTIVAL !
Jul 10, 2008

NOTE: Bad night for shooting, but you asked for it. You gotta know: no one else would have aired these photos. My cameras were dying. That's a sick feeling. One camera's photos were not even as big as your grandmother's mobile phone's. Many volunteer hours just to get them to postable. I'm going to bed now. The good side follows!

NIGHT THREE: Great music in this packed-house festival on the 3rd night, this time at The Cave (Chapel Hill; http://caverntavern.com ). First up was Beloved Binge (http://www.myspace.com/belovedbinge) then Maple Stave (http://www.myspace.com/maplestave ), and bringing down the house at the end of the night, Rat Jackson ( http://www.myspace.com/ratjacksonmusic ).

Shakori Hills Fall 2006 -Friday 10/6/06

Shakori Hills is a beautiful pastoral venue in Chatham County which hosts of North Carolina's favorite music festivals in April and October each year.

These are photos from Fall 2006. They are shot with different cameras and multiple memory cards, so I have to get them in order. Therefore, all the photo-sequence numbers will change. Originally posted these in a private setting til I could get them in order, but i keep getting delayed. So here's a tiny bit of the festival, all from the Friday shows. TONS more, unposted still, from other days and from other Shakori Hills festivals. TONS.

Equinox, 3/1/07, UNC-CH campus at Johnston Cntr
Mar 1, 2007

The rootstock jazz ensemble, Equinox (Chapel Hill NC) played as part of the UNC Jazz Festival at UNC's Johnston Center. Their performance was also part of the free, lunchtime series of varied music, Thursdays on the Terrace. With threatening weather, the music was set up just indoors from the terrace in the old English grand hall. Equinox is comprised largely of faculty and administrators of the University. The core of Equinox began playing in the early to mid 1970's as students here. (Yes, yes, that IS old. And they say the grooves in their faces only add to their fine patina, and helps account for their smooth, groovy sounds.) Equinox is: Steve Allred, bass; Scott Emmerman, guitar; Spence Foscue, drums; Terri Houston, vocals; Lou Sawyer, sax; & Holden Thorp, keys. Visit www.equinoxnc.com and find a show date to custom tailor to your jazz life. Also, if you're interested, I’ve uploaded 5 Equinox videos among 1000+ other videos I've shot and uploaded of mostly local music, Chapel Hill area. Check blogs at http://www.myspace.com/templesofgrey for periodic updates and a list of groups.
NOTE~NOTE~NOTE~NOTE: there's another Equinox show posted here, from 3/06. It's at the bottom, in the next to last folder.

Woodwork Roadshow, ...Leroy Savage Group, ...Ryan Cavanaugh, ...Tony Williamson, ...Mark Simonsen, ...Big Fat Gap, ...and more! Tyler's BBQ and Bluegrass Festival 2
Jun 26, 2005

Tyler's BBQ and Bluegrass Festival 2005 was my first time, and I think it was the 2nd year they'd held it. Despite gloomy skies, there was no rain, and the cloud cover kept temperatures in the 80's. It began (and ended, I think) with Woodwork Roadshow; who have moved their base from Chapel Hill to Columbia SC/Wilmington NC/Nashville TN, but check www.myspace.com/woodworkroadshow for incredible music. Also featured prominently was Leroy Savage Group, Ryan Cavanaugh (www.myspace.com/banjoryan) Tony Williamson, and Big Fat Gap (www.myspace.com/bigfatgap) Photos were with an old Vivitar digital.

Transit Union ...at Chapel Hill's Nightlight
Jan 4, 2008

Transit Union (Chapel Hill NC) played only 5 or 6 shows that I can recall, all in either Greensboro, Durham or Chapel Hill. Here is the last one (at least as of Aug.08), played at the beginning of 2008 at Nightlight in Chapel Hill. -A fine, FINE group! They are/were John Booker on drums; Will Hackney on bass, rhodes, & vocals; Noah Howard on guitar & vocals; and Nagendra Jayanty on guitar & lead vocals. Check their front-page myspace profiles/ top friends at http://www.myspace.com/transitunion for other projects they have which are much more active. Four videos from this show (and hundreds of other groups playing in the Chapel Hill area) at http://www.youtube.com/betsybetsybetsy Check the blogs at http://www.myspace.com/betsyssmile for URL lists alphabetized by group.

By the way, SLIDESHOW mode is, as always, the best way to view these (unless you're hunting individual pics.)

Tripp, at Jack Sprat Cafe
Aug 15, 2008

Tripp, at Jack Sprat Cafe, 100 block of E. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill. Yee dawgy they put on another great SHOW this night! Tripp members are Alex Wilkins (guitar, s/s vocals), Paul Fisher (drums), Hugh Swaso (guitar), and Alex Van Gils (bass). Joining them this night was Charles Cleaver on keys. As an extra surge of excitement, Josh Robert who'd played earlier with his band joined Tripp for a few songs.
Reccmdtn: view in SLIDESHOW mode and sit back, setting the interval that you choose.

Check their pages at http://www.myspace.com/trippband , http://www.myspace.com/jackspratcafeandbar , ww.myspace.com/joshrobertsandthehingesrock , and, in case you didn't clink over on first opp: http://www.myspace.com/trippband .
