The first 44 photos were taken in the rural district of Beuningen which is situated by the Waal with its river forelands and fascinating panoramic views, all enclosed by polders. Many age-old farm houses are a reminder of the times when this area was characterised by frugal country life. Today, however, nothing reminds us of the grinding poverty of the past, when it was difficult to earn a living on badly drained clay soil.
