I too remember that whistle and the wonderful smell of fresh donuts in the wood slide out shelves. I lived in Pomona California during the 60's. I could by a glazed donut for a nickel. Good old days!
Thanks for the memories I remember the Helms man coming down the street We put out the Blue H sign and he would stop at our house and we would go to the truck and the helms man would pull out the drawer of wonderful smelling donuts. And then we would pay fot the donuts and the helms man would give us change from the coin changer.
This is not what our Helms Bakery Truck looked like. Ours was a tan colored panel truck kind of vehicle with the driver's name on the passenger side (Chuck McDaniel).
NEAT!! Reminds me of the time, around '53-54, I was 4, maybe 5 years old, when I fell thru the roof of one of these... I still carry the scar on top of my head! Dad got rid of THAT toy in a hurry! My uncle was a used car dealer since aftger the war so I got to see, touch, ride in, and as I grew older, work on a lot of these old cars that I see in this album. Thanks.
Dave I have what I think is a 1946 Chevrolet bread truck with center steering that I would love to find more information about. It needs restoration but the motor still turns. Any ideas or pictures?
Hi - I'm s Fiesta historian and live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have been a Fiesta owner since 1976. There are about 30 - 35 known to exist (458 produced, of which 16 were exported). If you will share with me the serial # 585M______, and the body # L - ___( possibly your car is L - 27, L -214, L-432, on the firewall, left of the washer jar - your car may have belonged to Al Colley, from LA, in the 1970's). Also, I would like to update what year you bought it and other minor details, when it was restored, previous owner name and town. I will include you information (name and town only) the 2007 Fiesta Registry and give you regular updates on ownership, auction sales etc. seeveral times each year. I also have every article ever written on the car, and will E-mail you those, which mention my research efforts. Thanks for any help you can give me, and the other Fiesta fans. Your car really looks fantastic and it's the only polar white nile green Fiesta in the world ! Most ar Raven Red and Super White, or Turquios metallic and super white. Mine is L -42, with 42, 000 miles and is Polar white , and teal blue.

Yeah, I like you, am very nostalgic when it comes to the neighborhood Helms truck. I can remember getting out of grammar school and meeting the Helm's truck about a block away, during the walk home from school. I can still almost taste the warm glazed donuts that we payed 3 cents each for. I am very interested, more like obsessed, with finding one of these 60's vintage panel trucks to restore. Can anyone help me with this quest. I've spent hours on the Internet looking for a truck and can't even find a photo of one of these. It's almost as if they never existed other than in our memories.
I have spent a few happy afternoons at the museum in the past. I now find that it is closed indefinitely and has been for some time. Does anyone out there have any knowledge about the future of this fine establishment? It would be great to see all those cars once again. Does anyone know why it closed in the first place?
The above truck was part of the Deer Park Auto Museum collection in Escondido. About 2 years ago, the museum shut down. The collection was all convertibles except for a few rare vehicles like the Helms truck above. The truck was NOT restored.. only the exterior was in fairly good shape. The interior was stripped of all the woodwork, drawers and so forth. The ONLY fully restored and immaculate Helms truck I know of is at the Petersen Auto Museum on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. It is amazing and will bring back all those memories of those native Angelenos who remember the smell of those glazed donuts and rolls.
My Dad bought one like it brand new for my mom in 59. Only her's had the Golden Commando engine, green interior, aluminum colored side trim and twin antennes. it also had a/c installed under the dash and a power top. They're getting to be pretty rare cars. if I'm lucky Ill see maybe 1 59 sport fury in a year on the road maybe 1 convertable in 5 years.
I sold a 39 in Laguna Beach in 1972, and have regretted it ever since, I loved that truck. It was red, converted to a camper,I think it went to Oregon?Anybody know about it?? THANKS>>
