A Selection of my Best Nature Shots

I'm trying to limit this album to special images. I have since created albums by animal type and believe I have successfully culled images out of this album that are not on my Best Of List. Please feel free to provide positive or negative - constructive critisism of course - comments on any that you choose. I can only improve my craft by learning of the opinions of others.

I have arranged this album in order of upload, so the most recent ones will always appear at the beginning. Should you choose to return periodically, this will allow you to see the newest images at the front.

FOR THOSE OF MY GUESTS NOT FAMILIAR Fotki - Click on an image - it will enlarge and some options will appear to the right. If you want to scroll through the images just click anywhere to the right on the image and the next one will load. One of the options to the right of the image is a drop down bar that says, "4 Wallet Prints ($1.49)". If you click on the drop down you will see all sizes of prints that are available for purchase through this excellent professional lab. The Water Mark you see at the bottom left of the images will not appear on your prints. It will take about two weeks to get your images, they have never disappointed me with their quality.

Please feel free to view any other album now that you're "IN".

Best Regards,

Greg Lotz

IMG 5008 Eagle Crop

Yesterday, for some ridiculous old man reason my body decided to wake up at 6:30AM. Well, I thought, at least IF the Eagle comes to visit I will get a chance to get another picture, at 8AM it was 42 Degrees F and I grabbed my camera and headed out the door. At that very moment I heard the rush of 1,000 little splashes as all the birds on the lake - mostly Coots, ran across the top of the water in a mad dash for the reeds. I tried to ease out of our screen porch door but the darn door went BAM! and closed behind me. The two Eagles that were on the way both jerked in unison and angled upwards. Clearly I had ruined a mother or father/son teaching expedition as the second Eagle was splotchy indicating it was younger. The larger of the two however circled the lake and used our area as a thermal so I got a few images of her before he/she angled off to the next spot on his/her hunting trip. Fortunately there is enough light when they come to visit for some nice images of these beautiful creatures. That may change as Winter progresses, but for now, the slightly orange light of early morning gives a rather warm glow to their colors, but you also loose that cobalt blue Florida sky that we get later in the day. I love the presence this image has, the wide outstretched wings, and the fact that its head is looking down at something. The wingspan of a Bald Eagle can be up to 10 feet! If you haven't seen one of these beautiful creatures in flight they are quite large. When I was in the Navy we used to call the B-52 "Aluminum Overcast" - these are definitely Bird Overcast. A couple of years ago, my brother and I were flying RC planes here - they each had a 3 foot or less wingspan, and we were up high, gliding. You had to concentrate on the planes as they were up HIGH, and couldn't look away or you would loose the planes. Two Bald Eagles came in to check out what the heck those planes were, they started above them and then started clearly descending towards them, talons outstretched. The motors were off, so they were probably some sort of invader to them. The Bald Eagles were easily 3x the wingspan of the planes. We let the planes descend to about 50 feet and they came down with them - wow - really big. On the count of 3 we turned the engines back on (they were electric) and both Eagles immediately decided it was time to leave. Stunningly beautiful animals. I feel SO privileged to now have the repeated opportunity to get images like these....

That's a REALLY awesome shot!  Do you just use PhotoShop or do you use Lightroom/Aperture?  What ISO was this taken at Greg?

The exif is available there on the right - ISO 640 is what it was shot at, thanks!  I only have Photoshop Elements 8.0 currently.  Time and $$ will delay acquisition of the higher end software I am sad to say.  Just managed to scrape up the bucks for that lens!  LOL
