Silver Springs Escarpment
Oct 21, 2018

Over hill, over dale,
Thorough bush, thorough brier,
Over park, over pale,
Where the trail climbs higher,
We do wander every where,
Swifter than the moon’s sphere;
..........and so on courtesy of William S.....
Seven CORE walkers (and 2 hardy K9s) explored the dirt paths of the Silver Springs escarpment. We peered down into the not-quite-opened Dale Hodges Park (http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Parks/Pages/Locations/NW-parks/Dale-Hodges-Park.aspx) and meandered our way to the Silver Spring boardwalk, then returned by another path to lunch at Silver Point Pub (surprisingly good food). 5KM and 1.5 hours. Led by Stu. PICs by Stu and Kevin. Lovely morning

Powderface Ridge Memorial Hike
Sep 23, 2018

For our annual memorial hike to honour club members who have passed away, only 8 members joined the trip to Powderface Ridge, but unusually, the men outnumbered the women! After a damp and foggy start to the day, before we had even reached our destination, the sun came out and the weather turned out to be beautiful most of the time, although of course it was still a little chilly on top of the ridge. Elbow Lake and Rae Glacier
Aug 19, 2018

Organized by Carol, ten intrepid CORE hikers headed up HWY 40 to ascend to Elbow Lake and Rae Glacier. Despite forest fire haze, we had a a good day out, definitely not too hot and got some "vague" views of the rugged terrain in this area. Elbow Lake is at the headwaters of the Elbow River, and the view of the much-diminished Rae glacier was worth the climb up mostly rock strewn creek bed. 9-10 KM, 400-500 metres, depending on whether you followed Harv. Mike tarried at the lake to do some sketching. Pics by Stu, Jane, Mike, Harv and Julia.

Via Ferrata-Iron Path , T1 Terminator Peak (Golden, B.C.)
Aug 4, 2018

As I missed my chance to tackle a Via Ferrata in the Dolomites of Italy many years ago (due to illness). I finally got my chance at the top of Kicking Horse Ski Resort. It did not take much convincing to get CORE member Urszula to join me on my quest. It was a guided trip, eight people in our group. We did the Ascension Route which hugs the cliff face and takes to the top of T1 Terminator Peak. It is very safe as you are always protected (tied into the steel cable line), even with that there are moments even I was scared of what I was doing eg Guts Bridge and climbing on side sloping rungs with nothing but air below your feet. That is coming from a guy who has outdoor rock climbed up to 5.10 routes and scrambled some of the hardest mtns in the Rockies. Photos by Harvey

T2 Terminator Peak & Blue Heaven Lookout
Aug 4, 2018

At the top of T1 Peak (we left the V.F group), Uruszula and myself decide to do some more peak bagging at the top of Kicking Horse Ski Resort. From T1 Peak, we scrambled over to T2 Terminator Peak (Terminator Ridge), then backtrack to the day lodge (closed due to a wedding), then hiked over to the top of the Blue Heaven Chair (Dogtooth Ridge). We then quickly made our way back to the gondola (stops running at 5:00) for the heavenly ride down to the car, shower and CORE potluck dinner at 6:00 (otherwise we would to probably gone to bag the next peak over).

Bowl Over Loop, Kicking Horse Ski Resort, Golden, BC
Aug 4, 2018

7 CORE members, led by Carol and Julia, took the gondola to the top of Kicking Horse ski resort to hike the Bowl Over Loop. We started on the CPR Ridge Walk, an "easy" hike of 20-30 mins return, which took us 30 mins one way on huge rock steps with exposure on both sides, eventually getting down to Tower 15 at the start of a "more difficult" hike back up to the top. After a wrong trail, we found the way up and eventually made it to the top on a very steep trail of about 440m in about 1km, the last 10 mins of which was in the rain. Photos by Julia and Pam.

On Fri we had a lovely dinner out at the Eleven22 restaurant. We had a decadent potluck on Sat with so much food that we did it again on Sun. Grass Pass/Gunnery Creek
Jul 1, 2018

What a wonderful way to celebrate Canada's 151 birthday. The day started out sunny with possible threats of showers later in the day. With all the rain we have had, everything is very green. Wild flowers are in bloom. Trail is tucked away, not easy to find. Cheryl and John were able to find it and off we went immediately starting the climb. Views at the top were breath taking. In the distance weather was threatening to bring in rain. As we descended the rain started with gust of wind. Made for a more challenging climb down. Weather seemed to hold off just until we reached the road. Where the skies opened up. By the time we reached the cars, most of us were pretty soaked.

May 29, 2018

45 members attending our AGM and social.
We chose our new Executive - cheers to those who have volunteered to run our club! We also celebrated our coordinators, awarded Harvey the Chicken Mountain Award and were entertained by watching a slide show of events from the past year. Lots of good food and company were enjoyed. Many thanks to the executive for putting on a great evening. Pictures by Pat and Julia

Barrier Look Out
May 26, 2018

At the beginning of the day we thought that we would be going on a different hike. The road was gated and locked. So John came up with plan B. Off we went to Barrier Lake Look Out. Amazing day, lots to look at. Even with the threat of rain, we had no rain in site.

Glenbow Ranch to Cochrane
May 20, 2018

A fine day for our walk, much of it paved. Steepest gradient was about 40% but the cumulative elevation over the 15 km hike was only 230 m. Interesting, tasty lunch at Half Hitch & everyone liked the prize-winning Papa Bear brew.

Bow Valley Hike
May 5, 2018

Another amazing hike with a large group of CORE members. Weather was great, we dodged forecasted rain. Yes spring is here even thou we could still see some snow tucked in between some of the tree foliage.

16 participants led by John R. Temperature was 15C and mostly sunny.

Bow Valley Prov. Park is located at the intersection of three ecosystems - alpine, subalpine and montane. Some sources list these 3 zones as mountains, boreal forests and grasslands. This area contains numerous post-glacial landforms, including these depositional features; moraines, eskers, kames, and kettles.

Chester-Sawmill snowshoe
Apr 1, 2018

Started from Chester & it was (almost) all downhill from there. Had to break trail most of the way but the snow base was quite firm. Mike told us about skiing the same trail in olden days: there are still signs left from those times. (This was a joint CORE/Calgary Ski Club Event. Photos taken by Calgary Ski Club member have been removed upon request)

A 200 metre climb and fun run down, blue sky, great trail conditions, making for a perfect day on this 11 KM loop. Due to the mysterious HK effect, the trail stretched to 12 K for the swifter members of our group. And then there was the case of the runaway ski, but that's another story. Pics by Stu.

PLPP Marl Lake Loop
Feb 10, 2018

The best laid plans went awry. Our route from Boulton up Whiskey Jack was foiled by a lot of new snow the day before, and the trail was not trackset nor traveled upon. So we six retreated to the Visitor's centre and skied the Marl Lake loop. Beautiful day and freshly tracked snow, with a LOT of what seemed like more ups than downs. Photos by Stu and Julia

XC Ski WBC West Crystaline Logger's Loop
Feb 4, 2018

Organized by Stu C., our little CORE group of six spent a wonderful afternoon skiing the W. Crystaline-Logger's-Sundog-E.Crystaling loop. 8.5 KM, 2.5 hours, fresh snow if a bit erratically trackset. We encountered at least 8 skijoring enthusiasts (xc skiers with their harnessed dogs) on the trails. Temperature went from -18 C to -8 C. A great day skiing, but near whiteout driving conditions coming back into the city.

Coordinator Harvey. Participants Carol, Cheryl, Laura, Gary, John, Chris, James. Some snowshoed, other walked with icers on the hardpacked trail, nice trail that went up and down thru the woods. A change from the original snowshoe trip of Ribbon Creek because coordinator had no desire to drive Hwy. 1 in whiteout conditions (yes they closed Deerfoot Trail on the same day). Skiing the Tramline, Lake Louise
Jan 27, 2018

Relatively short ski for my group of 10. Good ski conditions with a little fresh snow on good, machine-set tracks. Cloudy day & a little cool to be outside for lunch where we observed the crowd observing the ice sculptures in front of the Chateau. Fun ski out for all, even the timorous (of steeper slopes).
