the Earthquake of 1978

On 20 June 1978 (23.05 local time) the city was hit by a powerful earthquake registering a magnitude of 6.5 in Richter 's scale. The tremor caused considerable damage to several thousands buildings (many buildings were demolished shortly after the earthquake ) and even to some of the city 's well known landmarks including most of the Ottoman and Byzantine period monuments; 45 people were crushed to death when an entire apartment block collapsed in Nikiforou Foka and Theohari street junction, in the Ipodromio district, exactly where the Thessaloniki History Centre stands now .
